February 2006 Report:
Back to normal on the Russian River

The Russian River vacation area is now dry and everyone is excited about the arrival of spring and a great year ahead.

Don't confuse the Russian River with Hurricane Katrina. It was tense here as the water levels were rising and the rain did not let up, but the Russian River community does not suffer long-term damage when it floods. Mostly it's carpets and some sheetrock that needs replacing from water seeping up through foundations. Everyone has flood insurance and FEMA offers additional assistance. Recovery is quick.

Most businesses stay open and unaffected through the flooding. For businesses that have water reach their property, the usual recovery time is one to two weeks. As of mid-February you would not know there had been a flood, with the exception of a few businesses that are taking the opportunity to make upgrades to their establishments using the insurance reimbursement.

The newscasts tend to air the highest crisis footage of the flooding, and this gives an exaggerated impression of the damage. We’ve had some spectacular springtime weather lately and many visitors are enjoying off-season rates and discounts.

Kayaking on the Russian River along Steelhead BeachThere is no better way to experience the beauty of the Russian River than to take a trip down it. There are a number of easy drop/pickup locations. You could tour the inland sections or travel the coastal environment further downstream.

Floods have been part of the Russian River ecosystem for its entire history. Every year on the first week of March we take time to enjoy the grandness of nature.
