Overview -
There are over 180 wineries in the Russian River Wine Region. The number is so
high because of the ideal growing conditions and tourism services that are provided
to visitors. The wineries want you to come to come taste their wines and hopefully
leave with a new favorite.
Commentary -
The two main towns you will be likely be choosing from to stay at are Guerneville
and Healdsburg. Both are in ideal locations within a short drive of many wineries
while also having active main streets. Guerneville
is the more country town and is closer to the other activities you will want to
add to your trip such as visiting the Coast, the Redwoods and the River. Healdsburg
is the larger more urban town and has a greater selection of in town tasting rooms.
There are a lot of wine tasting opportunities outside of visiting the wineries
(at restaurants, lodges, events, and in-town tasting rooms). However you would
be missing out if you did not take the time to tour where the grapes are grown
and the wine is made. Just the architecture and landscaping of the buildings are
amazing. But what is special about visiting the wineries is the insight the tour
guides can give you about their grapes and winemaking process. You get the opportunity
to learn about the wines you are sampling and develop a deeper appreciation as
a result. Not all wineries offer tasting and guided tours, and some are by appointment
only. So be sure and check their website or give them a call. A great place to
start is our Online Wineries Guide. Here you
will find a review off all the websites for the area dedicated to helping you
plan your trip. Also check out our Complete Wine Country
Guide.
